Why Was Signing the Treaty of Versailles a Turning Point in History?
Introduction.
The Treaty of Versailles, or also known as The Peace Treaty of Versailles was a major turning point in history because it was the treaty that concluded World War I. People often claimed that it was a failure because although it ended World War I, it didn’t prevent a second World War from happening. The Treaty of Versailles is considered one of the causes of the Second World War as Germans considered it a national humiliation and Adolf Hitler used it to ‘manipulate’ the Germans and gain power.
What Did It Do?
The Treaty of Versailles helped to bring an end to World War I and also resoluted what Germany would do after the war. The four countries that were the main signatories, as well as Germany, were Britain, United States, France and Italy.
Was it successful?
Many historians believe that the Treaty of Versailles was unsuccessful since it led to the rise of Hitler. It is said that the Treaty failed because it made the Germans unhappy since they thought they had been treated unfairly. The treaty also did not satisfy the Americans, French, and the British as they believed that the Germans deserved even more punishment. One of the main causes to why the Treaty of Versailles was inefficient was that the terms mentioned in the Treaty were not implemented. The Treaty was also harsh, which a lot of Germans weren’t happy about, so Hitler took advantage of that and tried to unite the Germans against the rest of Europe, which led to the Second World War. This offered a golden opportunity for Germany to make a second bid for European domination.
