The treaty was divided into sections: territorial, military, financial and general. The Allies seized all of Germany’s overseas colonies as a result Germany lost over 1 million square miles of land.
The German government was informed of the Allied peace terms on 7th May. The proposals had “exceeded the worst fears of the direst of pessimists,” as Germany had lost lots of land and that East Prussia had been separated from the rest of Germany, which came as a devastating blow. The League of Nations also took control of Germany’s overseas colonies.

“As soon as the fighting stopped, German troops moved out of Belgium and France while the victorious Allies sent troops to occupy Germany up to the Rhine. They also kept up the sea blockade so that Germany remained at near starvation. The occupation and blockade were intended to give the Allies the whip-hand when it came to laying down the terms of the peace treaty."
